Whether it's the sea, a swimming pool or bath time, water is exciting to most children - but remember it can also be dangerous, so always play safe and never leave your little ones on their own around water.

  • Use your imagination, don't be afraid to have fun when you teach arm strokes, turn it into a game of tiger arms and roar like a tiger with each forward pulling motion; encourage toddlers to jump like a frog when jumping into the pool off the side.

  • Handstands are always a favourite with older kids - see who can do the longest and most impressive one (dads usually like to get involved in this too!).

  • Swimming pools can feel like huge baths for little ones. With their armbands safely on, scatter some plastic toys around them in the pool and help them scoop them up with a bucket, net or just eager hands.
