Parabens are a group of preservatives (commonly used in most shampoos and toiletries, just check the back of pack). They are very effective because they are aggressive and efficient at destroying the bacteria that can form and grow in these products. It's because they're strong that they are another common irritant responsible for upsetting the natural balance of the skin.
