Welcome to the eighth newsletter and I am delighted to announce that my work on baby skincare issues and especially my Babycare- back to basics™ leaflet has just won the very first Nursing in Practice Dermatology Award. This came as a wonderful surprise when I attended the Awards lunch at the Birmingham NEC back in November. The Nursing in Practice Awards 2008 rewards best practice in a variety of clinical areas, and are designed to recognise excellence and innovation in the primary care setting. For more information about this event and how to get your free leaflet (version 5 is sponsored by HalosnHorns) go to: http://tipslimited.com/newsStopPress.htm and scroll down to November 19th 2008.
Much is written about the way Dad's can feel left out when their partner is breastfeeding but this need not be the case. Everyone knows that breastfeeding will give your new baby the best possible start in life but they may not realise the importance of a supportive partner and how this can greatly improve your chances of success. The following tips about how Dad's can be involved and the benefits of skin-to-skin contact include:
Dad's did you know why breastfeeding is good for your baby?...
-
Breast milk is the perfect food - no manufactured milk comes close
-
Breast milk is ready anytime, anyplace, anywhere
-
Breast milk is free!
-
Breast milk changes to meet your babies growing needs
-
There are no bottles to clean and no feeds to make up
-
Baby's nappies are not as smelly as bottle fed babies
-
The health benefits for your baby last for a lifetime
-
Your babies immune system will be stronger
-
Your babies IQ will be higher
-
Your partner will get her figure back quicker
-
Your partner will be less likely to develop breast, ovarian or uterine cancer
-
Your partner will be less likely to suffer from post natal depression
-
Breastfeeding gives your partner a natural high!
-
Your sex life does not need to suffer!
Dads... although you can't breastfeed your baby, you do play a key role in the success of breastfeeding...
Your support is vital:
- You can support and encourage your partner while she is feeding by bringing her drinks and making sure she is comfortable.
- When Dad feeds Mum - he feeds baby too, so get cooking!
- When your baby wakes, you can change your baby's nappy before handing him to Mum for feeding.
- Sit with your partner and share the feeding process. You don't need to hold a bottle to feel close to your baby.
- Skin-to-skin contact is as intimate an experience as breastfeeding. Once your baby has finished a feed place your baby, dressed in a nappy next to your skin (remember not to wear strong aftershave as this could irritate your baby's skin).
- Within minutes your babies temperature, respiration and heart rate settle and you both experience the same closeness as a mother does while breastfeeding.
- This will greatly enhance the father-baby relationship leading to a deeper bond as your child grows.
- Other ways to stay close to your baby include bathing/showering together (babies really love this!), baby massage or carrying your baby in a sling.
Key advantages of Skin-to-Skin Contact (SSC):
- SSC leads to physiological stability within minutes.
- SSC at birth greatly helps the initiation of breastfeeding.
- SSC is ideal for fostering good mother/baby relationships.
- SSC is ideal for fostering good father/baby relationships.
- SSC is ideal for fostering good sibling/baby relationships.
- SSC is non-invasive and can be carried out anywhere.
- SSC encourages the colonisation of friendly bacteria.
- SSC reduces the likelihood of your baby developing infections.
- SSC leads to fewer complications in the preterm infant.
Competition:
HalosnHorns and TIPS Ltd (link to newsletter no. 12 at: http://tipslimited.com/e-newsletter12.htm ) have joined together to find the cutest pictures featuring you with your daddy. This could be a shot of you as a baby or toddler in the bath or shower but please remember to protect your modesty! Your daddy should be prepared for these photos to be featured on the HalosnHorns website (we will contact you if this is a possibility) and we have six 250ml packs of HalosnHorns Baby bath as a wee thank you for the winners.
Please ask your Daddy to email us with your photo and a short description.
That's all for this time and happy snapping!
Sharon
